Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have rushed to Trent Alexander-Arnold's defence after being left stunned by his fluent Spanish at his Real Madrid unveiling.
Shearer addressed those who slammed the player for learning Spanish while still at Liverpool by saying: "Good for him!”
Alexander-Arnold made the switch to the La Liga giants for a fee of £10million – an £8.4m fee plus his remaining wages – after deciding not to extend his contract with boyhood club Liverpool at the end of this season.
The topic came up on a recent episode of The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Shearer, Micah Richards and Alex Aljoe, where Lineker commented: “His Spanish was pretty good, wasn’t it boys?
“Quick mention for him by the way.
Good for him if he was learning Spanish.”

Lineker went on to say: “Honestly, the way some people turned on him saying, ‘It just shows you he was probably learning for a year or two because he knew he was going.’
“Well, maybe he did have some kind of career plan, that’s okay!
Speaking to the Real Madrid YouTube channel, he said: “The meetings and the tactical talks are all in Spanish so they take some getting used to.
But in terms of day to day conversations, it’s easy.
“I have a decent base level of Spanish so I can hold a decent conversation with the lads and likewise they have a very good understanding of English so it’s easy to communicate.”
The 26-year-old has been training under new Real manager Xabi Alonso and is expected to make his debut for Los Blancos in the upcoming Club World Cup clash with Al-Hilal on Wednesday night.
